Dwarf Name Generator
Hard, Norse-flavored dwarven names with clan surnames — Thrain Battlehammer, Balin Ironfist, Dwalin Stonebeard. Built on the same naming bedrock Tolkien borrowed from the Old Norse Dvergatal.
Hard Norse-Tolkien names + clan surnames — Thrain Battlehammer.
What makes a name sound dwarven
Dwarf names trace back to Old Norse — Tolkien literally took Thorin, Balin, and Dwalin from a medieval Norse poem. They're built on hard consonants and short, sturdy syllables, usually paired with a compound clan surname that names a craft or a deed: Battlehammer, Ironfist, Goldbeard. This generator pairs a Norse-hard given name with one of those clan surnames about 60% of the time, and leaves the rest as standalone given names.
When to use it
D&D dwarves (hill and mountain)
Works for both subraces. The clan surname does real worldbuilding — Ironfist and Battlehammer imply warrior clans, Goldbeard and Fireforgeimply smiths and merchants. Pick one that matches your character's background. Need the rest of the party? The fantasy name generator covers every other race.
WoW and MMO dwarves
Fits WoW, ESO, and similar. If a name is taken, swap the surname and reroll — the combinations run into the thousands.
Naming a dwarven hold
Roll a handful from the same clan surname for a family, or several different surnames for the clans of a single mountain hold. Shared surnames instantly signal who's related.
FAQ
Are male and female dwarf names different?
The given-name pool includes both — Thrain and Brunhild, Gimli and Dagna. The clan surname stays the same regardless. Reroll until the given name fits.
Can I get a name without a surname?
About 40% of rolls are a standalone given name. Keep rerolling, or just drop the surname from any result.
Why do some surnames describe crafts and others describe battle?
That's intentional — dwarven clan names traditionally commemorate what the clan is known for. Use it as a hook: a Goldbeard grew up around treasure and trade, a Battlehammer around war.
