Warrior Cat Name Generator

The only Warrior Cats name generator that follows Erin Hunter's actual canon rules — clan-flavored prefixes (forest words for ThunderClan, marsh for ShadowClan, moor for WindClan, water for RiverClan), rank-locked suffixes (-paw for apprentices, -star for leaders), with the full life-stage progression for every cat. No generic adjective-plus-noun slop.

One-tap roll. Random clan, random rank — fastest way to a canon-shaped name.

How Warrior Cat names actually work in canon

Most warrior cat generators online ignore the actual canon rules and just slap two random words together. The Erin Hunter naming system is far more structured than that — and that structure is exactly what makes a name feel like a real warrior cat instead of a fantasy noun mash.

Every warrior cat name is two parts: a prefix and a suffix, joined into one word with no space. Bramble + star = Bramblestar. Fire + heart = Fireheart. The prefix is given at birth and stays with the cat for life. The suffix changes at every rank ceremony.

The hidden rules most generators miss:

  • Prefixes are clan-flavored. ThunderClan leans on forest plants and prey (Bramble, Squirrel, Fern) plus warm colors and fire. ShadowClan picks darker, marsh-and-pine words (Raven, Toad, Pine, Night). WindClan uses wind, sky, and speed words (Swift, Hare, Heather). RiverClan favors water, fish, and silver imagery (Mist, Minnow, Silver, Reed).
  • Suffixes are rank-locked. Kits all get -kit. Apprentices all get -paw. Leaders all get -star. Only warriors have an open suffix pool — and even that has rules.
  • Medicine cats never get combat suffixes. No -claw, -fang, -bite. Medicine names are soft: -leaf, -pool, -feather, -song. Leafpool, Spottedleaf, Jayfeather — all medicine cats.
  • The prefix carries through life. Bramblekit becomes Bramblepaw becomes Brambleclaw becomes Bramblestar. The cat is the same cat. Our generator shows you that progression on every roll.

Names by clan — pick your warrior's home

Switch to Lore Mode above and pick a clan to lock the prefix pool to canon-accurate flavor. Below is what each clan sounds like.

ThunderClan — forest and courage

ThunderClan lives in the forest, and their names show it. Expect prefixes drawn from forest plants (Oak, Bramble, Holly, Fern, Ash), prey (Squirrel, Sparrow, Mouse, Rabbit), and big cats (Lion, Tiger, Leopard) that signal the clan's tradition of courage. Warm fur colors are common in ThunderClan, so Russet, Tawny, Amber, Ginger show up too. The clan's element is fire — hence Firestar, Flamekit, Emberpaw. Example rolls: Brambleclaw, Squirrelheart, Oakfur, Lionblaze.

ShadowClan — pine marsh and night

ShadowClan's pine-forest-and-marsh territory shapes their vocabulary toward dark, low-light words. Prefixes lean on night (Night, Raven, Shadow, Crow), conifers (Pine, Cedar, Yew), and marsh creatures (Toad, Adder, Frog, Beetle). ShadowClan also values hunting prowess, so Stalk, Talon, Fang appear. Example rolls: Ravenwing, Toadfoot, Pinepaw, Shadowclaw.

WindClan — open moor and speed

WindClan is built for the open moor — fast cats, lean builds, sky themes. Their prefixes draw on wind (Wind, Breeze, Gust, Whisper), speed (Swift, Dash, Bolt, Bound), open-ground prey (Hare, Rabbit, Lark, Kestrel), and moor plants (Heather, Gorse, Bracken). WindClan cats are often pale-furred, so White, Cloud, Silver, Pearl appear. Example rolls: Swiftpaw, Heathertail, Crowfeather, Harewhisker.

RiverClan — water and silver

RiverClan lives on the river — sleek pelts, swimming cats, fish for prey. Their prefixes pull from water bodies (River, Mist, Pool, Stream), fish (Minnow, Pike, Trout, Salmon), water plants (Reed, Willow, Rush, Lily), and silver-shimmer imagery (Silver, Pearl, Pewter, Slate). Example rolls: Mistyfoot, Reedwhisker, Silverstream, Pikepaw.

Names by rank — what stage is your cat at?

Each cat lives through up to six ranks. The suffix tells you which one. Pick a rank in Lore Mode to lock the suffix pool.

Kit (up to 6 moons)

All kits use -kit. There is no exception — Bramblekit is Bramblekit until the apprentice ceremony. If a generator gives you Bramblepaw for a kit, the generator's broken. Example: Firekit, Squirrelkit, Hollykit.

Apprentice (6 moons → warrior trial)

At six moons the kit becomes an apprentice and drops -kit for -paw. Apprentices serve under a mentor (usually a warrior) until they pass the warrior trial. Example: Firepaw, Squirrelpaw, Hollypaw.

Warrior (open suffix pool)

The warrior ceremony is the big naming moment in Warrior Cats — the clan leader bestows a new suffix that the cat carries for life (or until leadership). The suffix isn't random; it's chosen by the leader, usually to reflect the warrior's personality, appearance, or an event from their apprenticeship. Body-part suffixes are most common: -claw, -tail, -fur, -pelt, -foot, -fang, -whisker. Nature suffixes are next: -storm, -leaf, -flower, -blossom. Behavior or trait suffixes round it out: -heart, -song, -shine. Example: Fireheart, Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw.

Medicine Cat

Medicine cats train under the clan's existing medicine cat. When they earn their full name, they take a soft, healing-themed suffix — never a combat one. Canon medicine suffixes: -leaf, -feather, -pool, -song, -cloud, -petal, -light, -wing. Example: Leafpool, Spottedleaf, Jayfeather, Mothwing.

Leader

When the deputy succeeds the previous leader, their suffix is replaced with -star. Brambleclaw → Bramblestar. Fireheart → Firestar. The prefix never changes. Our generator shows this transition on every roll under "Life-stage names."

Elder

Retired warriors usually keep their warrior name into elderhood — Mousefur stays Mousefur. A handful of canon elders have age-coded suffixes like -gaze or -whisker, but these are uncommon. Our Elder mode picks 80% from warrior suffixes and 20% from age-coded ones.

WCUE Mode — Warrior Cats Ultimate Edition (Roblox)

WCUE (Warrior Cats Ultimate Edition) is the massive Roblox roleplay game where players make and roleplay their own warrior cat OCs. Naming inside WCUE has two constraints that don't exist in the books:

  • 15-character display limit. Roblox display names cap at 20 characters; WCUE specifically uses the cat-name slot which most players keep under 15 for readability. Long canon-style names like Brackenfurpaw or Heatherstormtail are too long.
  • Alphabetic only. No underscores, no numbers, no punctuation — pure letters, pure Erin Hunter style.

Our WCUE Mode filters the pool to names meeting both constraints, and shows you the character count so you know you're under the cap when you copy it into the game. Roll as many as you want until you find one that feels like your cat.

What you can use these names for

  • Wattpad and AO3 fanfic. Original warrior cat OCs for fanfic stories — drop one into a clan and the name already fits.
  • WCUE (Warrior Cats Ultimate Edition) on Roblox. Use WCUE Mode to get names under the 15-char cap.
  • Tabletop and D&D campaigns.Run a Warrior Cats one-shot or a cat-people D&D reskin using these as character names.
  • OC art prompts. Give yourself a name plus a clan and rank, then draw the cat that fits.
  • Fan quizzes and personality tests. Pair a roll with a clan-match quiz to see if you'd be a ThunderClan apprentice or a ShadowClan medicine cat.

FAQ

Can I use these names in published fanfic?

Yes. The combinatorial outputs are public-domain by composition — no single canon character owns "Bramble" or "claw" individually. We also filter out the major canon characters (Firestar, Bluestar, Brambleclaw, Leafpool, and 100+ more) so you won't accidentally get served an established name. Treat any name that does match canon as a coincidence and pick again.

Why doesn't the generator use real Erin Hunter character names?

On purpose. The generator's goal is to give you a name for your OC — using Firestar as a starter name for your fanfic protagonist creates legal and creative confusion. The denylist excludes the ~300 most well-known canon cats so your OC's name feels like a fresh one.

What's a good medicine cat name?

The convention is softer, usually with a healing-themed or nature suffix. Leafpool, Jayfeather, Spottedleaf, Cinderpelt (before her warrior arc), Mothwing, Yellowfang all fit the mold. Avoid combat suffixes (-claw, -fang, -bite) — they break canon.

Are warrior cat names case-sensitive in WCUE?

Display-wise, no — Roblox keeps your display however you typed it, but searches and friend lookups are case-insensitive. Our generator capitalizes the prefix only (Bramblestar, not BrambleStar) to match the books and the WCUE community norm.

Can I lock the clan but pick a random rank?

Yes. In Lore Mode, set Clan to ThunderClan and leave Rank on "Any rank". The generator will keep rolling warriors, medicine cats, and elders within ThunderClan only — useful for populating an entire clan in a fanfic without going cross-territory.

How many unique names can the generator produce?

Each clan has 70-90 clan-flavored prefixes plus a 100-word neutral pool. Cross with ~30 warrior suffixes and you get ~5,000 warrior names per clan, ~20,000 across all 4 clans. Add medicine cat, leader, apprentice, and kit variants and the total combinatorial space exceeds 50,000. You won't hit duplicates in a single session.

Is the generator related to the Warrior Cats games or books?

No. Warrior Cats is © Erin Hunter / HarperCollins. This is an unofficial fan tool. Names generated here are fan-made and not endorsed by the publisher. The naming rules followed are documented across the published books and have been respected by the fan community for 20+ years.
